Medical Billing - Customized Reports
In this installment of medical billing and your DME software, we’re going to take a look at customized reports. This is an area that most billing companies have a lot of problems with because it involves a little bit of programming and creativity. Hopefully, this review will give you a few tips on how to get the most out of your customized reports.
It’s great to be able to bill your patients and let’s face it, that’s where the money comes from. But how are you going to know how much money you’ve made and how profitable your medical billing business is without reports to show you? Well, fortunately for the medical billing company, most DME software packages come with a module that they call customized reports, or something along those lines.
Usually, these modules will come with certain stock reports such as sales, accounts receivable and so on. A decent piece of software will usually provide you with about five or six reports that for the most part will give you all the information that you’ll need in order to find out how profitable your business has been.
But what if these reports just aren’t enough for you? What if you’d like to get a report that not only shows you total sales, but breaks it down by salesperson in your organization or by medical carrier. What do you do then? What if you simply don’t like the way the output of the report looks or hate how little or how much info is given in the report. Maybe you just want a few facts and figures. Maybe you want more. The combinations are endless.
That’s where the report generator and creator comes in. The better software packages will give you the ability to actually create your own report. How? Well, simple for you but not so simple for the programmer who had to put the module together. Basically, what they do is create a menu system where you can pick out the particular fields that you want to have included in the report. You will then have another option that allows you to pick out how you want the report sorted. Do you want details or just totals. There are usually dozens of options to choose just what information will be included.
The high end software packages will also make it so that you can design the layout. In other words, you can specify exactly where on the page each field is going to print. You can have the patient name printed on top of the column or down the left hand side or any place you like. This can be customized for every field in the report.
The downside to these custom reports is that they take a little bit of work to create and you really need to know what you’re doing. The manuals that usually come with the software are weak when it comes to explaining how to create reports, so you’ll have quite a job on your hands getting a decent one out of the system if you’ve never done this before. If you need help, however, most of these software companies will offer on the phone support.
Customized reports are a real asset to finding out just where your business stands. Just be prepared for quite a learning curve in getting these things done just the way you like.
